When treatment helps

Adult ADHD patterns we treat

ADHD in adults rarely looks like the stereotype of a hyperactive child. It usually shows up as chronic overwhelm, missed deadlines, emotional volatility, and relationships that keep eroding.

Focus that won't stay put

You start a task, drift to another, then realize an hour disappeared. Meetings, reports, and conversations feel like a series of near-misses. Adults with ADHD often aren't distractible in every context — they're distractible when the task isn't urgent or novel.

Procrastination that punishes you

You know what needs to happen. You want to start. But the activation energy feels impossible until the deadline creates a crisis. Then you work in frantic bursts, exhausted, and promise the next time will be different.

Emotional intensity and rejection sensitivity

ADHD isn't just an attention issue. Many adults experience rapid mood shifts, irritability, and deep sensitivity to perceived criticism or rejection. These emotional patterns can strain relationships and careers as much as forgetfulness does.

Impulsivity with consequences

Interrupting, overspending, driving too fast, saying yes without thinking, or using substances to settle the restless noise. Impulsivity in ADHD often shows up as a pattern of decisions you regret but can't quite stop.

Time blindness and disorganization

Chronically late, always searching for keys or your phone, missing deadlines that seemed far away yesterday. The external world runs on linear time; the ADHD brain often doesn't. Structure and support make the difference.

Substance use to self-medicate

Stimulants, cannabis, nicotine, or alcohol are common ways adults quiet an overactive brain or force focus. That self-treatment often creates its own cycle. We address ADHD and any co-occurring substance use together.

How we treat ADHD

Skills, structure, and psychiatric care — together

ADHD treatment works best when therapy builds practical skills, medication is managed carefully, and the environment around the person is structured to support success.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for ADHD

Practical, structured CBT adapted for adult ADHD. We work on breaking tasks into executable steps, catching catastrophic thinking, building initiation routines, and managing the shame that comes from years of underperformance feedback.

Executive function coaching

Concrete skills for planning, prioritization, time estimation, and follow-through. We build systems — not willpower — because ADHD brains respond to environment design, not lectures about trying harder.

Psychiatric evaluation & medication management

Thorough evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and rule out anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, or substance effects. Our medical team prescribes and monitors stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications when appropriate, with careful attention to misuse risk and cardiovascular health.

DBT skills & distress tolerance

Emotion regulation, impulse control, and interpersonal skills from DBT. These skills help with the rejection sensitivity, mood swings, and reactive patterns that make ADHD so hard on relationships and self-esteem.

Trauma-informed care

ADHD and trauma symptoms overlap, and many adults with ADHD have lived through repeated failure, bullying, or family conflict. We treat the whole picture, not just the checklist symptoms, so progress doesn't stall.

Dual-diagnosis care

When ADHD coexists with substance use, treating one without the other usually fails. We coordinate ADHD care with addiction treatment so medication, therapy, and recovery support move in the same direction.

Levels of care

ADHD treatment programs, from PHP to aftercare

Most people aren't sure which level of care they need. That's what the assessment is for — and you can move between levels as life changes.

  1. 015 days/week · ~6 hrs/day

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for ADHD

Our most intensive outpatient level. Daily therapy, skills groups, and psychiatric monitoring while you live at home. PHP is useful when ADHD has caused a work crisis, relationship collapse, or serious co-occurring depression or substance use.

  2. 023–5 days/week · day or evening

    ADHD Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Several structured sessions each week combining CBT, executive-function skills, and medication management. IOP fits around a job or school schedule and gives enough repetition to actually build new habits.

  3. 03Weekly · ongoing

    Outpatient therapy & medication management

Weekly individual therapy with periodic psychiatric follow-up. This is the right level once you've built foundational skills and need maintenance, accountability, and medication adjustments.

  4. 04When more support is needed

Higher level of care (vetted partners)

If severe substance withdrawal, active suicidal thinking, or an eating disorder needs inpatient or residential stabilization first, we coordinate with trusted, vetted partners and take the guesswork out of the transition — then continue your ADHD care when you return to outpatient.

Across the river from Maryland

Convenient for Maryland commuters

Our Arlington center is a short drive from Montgomery County, Prince George's County, and the broader Maryland suburbs. Many clients choose in-person PHP and IOP here because the commute is manageable and the program fits around work. Telehealth is available for Virginia residents between in-person visits.

Common questions

ADHD treatment questions, answered

Can adults really get ADHD treatment, or is it just for kids?

Absolutely. Many adults are diagnosed for the first time in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, often after a child is diagnosed or after a job demands more organization than they can force. Adult ADHD is real, treatable, and responds well to the right combination of therapy, skills, and medication.

How do I know if it's ADHD, anxiety, or both?

They overlap. Anxiety can look like restlessness and trouble concentrating; ADHD can make you anxious because you keep falling behind. Our psychiatric evaluation separates the two and builds a treatment plan that addresses both if both are present.

Will you just put me on Adderall?

No. Medication is one option, not the default. Some people do well on stimulants, others on non-stimulants like atomoxetine or guanfacine, and some people manage well without medication. We discuss risks, benefits, sleep, heart history, and substance use history so the decision is informed and individualized.

What if I have ADHD and a history of substance use?

We treat both. Stimulant medication is handled with extra caution and monitoring in that situation, but ADHD treatment doesn't have to stop. Non-stimulant options, skills-based therapy, DBT, and close coordination with addiction care make it possible to manage both conditions safely.

What's the difference between PHP and IOP for ADHD?

PHP is roughly six hours a day, five days a week, and is used when symptoms are severe or multiple conditions are active. IOP is a few sessions per week with scheduling flexibility so you can keep working. Many people start in PHP or IOP and step down to weekly outpatient care.

Does insurance cover ADHD treatment?

Most commercial insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including PHP and IOP for ADHD. We verify your benefits before you start and explain expected out-of-pocket costs. Self-pay options are available for those without insurance.

Do you offer telehealth for ADHD treatment?

Yes, for Virginia residents — our clinicians are licensed in Virginia, so telehealth sessions are available statewide. In-person PHP and IOP care at our Arlington center is available for Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC residents.
