When medication management helps

Common reasons people seek medication support

Medication isn't the answer for everyone, but when symptoms are severe, persistent, or limiting daily life, the right medication at the right dose can make therapy and recovery possible.

Your medication isn't working well enough

You take it as prescribed, but symptoms still dominate your day. Maybe the dose is off, the diagnosis is incomplete, or a co-occurring condition is muddying the picture. We reassess and adjust based on how you actually function, not just what a chart says.

Side effects are making life harder

Fatigue, weight gain, sleep disruption, sexual side effects, or emotional blunting can make medication feel like a trade-off you can't afford. We look for alternatives, adjust timing, and pair medication with therapy so you need less over time.

You're managing addiction and mental health at the same time

Medication for one condition can worsen the other if it isn't chosen carefully. We coordinate psychiatric medication and MAT so antidepressants, sleep aids, and anti-anxiety medications support recovery instead of destabilizing it.

You're starting medication for the first time

First-time psychiatric medication can feel overwhelming. We explain the options, set realistic expectations, and monitor closely through the first weeks so you don't have to figure it out alone.

You want to taper or stop a medication safely

Stopping psychiatric medication abruptly can cause rebound symptoms or withdrawal. If you and your prescriber agree a taper is appropriate, we create a slow, supervised plan with therapy support.

You need medication that fits your program schedule

Our prescriber sees clients in PHP, IOP, and outpatient sessions. That means medication decisions stay connected to what's happening in therapy, groups, and your daily life — not a separate 15-minute check-in.

What we manage

Psychiatric medications, MAT, and close monitoring

Our prescriber works as part of your treatment team. Medication decisions are based on your full clinical picture, not a symptom checklist alone.

Psychiatric evaluation & diagnosis

A thorough clinical assessment to clarify diagnoses, rule out medical or substance-related causes, and understand what has already been tried. We review history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals before recommending anything.

Antidepressant & anxiety medication management

SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, and other evidence-based options for depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and panic. We monitor response, side effects, and interactions with any other substances or medications.

Mood stabilizer & bipolar medication management

Careful prescribing and monitoring for bipolar disorder, mood swings, and related conditions. We track mood patterns, sleep, and energy to keep medication aligned with your stability goals.

ADHD medication management

Stimulant and non-stimulant options for adult ADHD, with special attention to substance use history, cardiovascular risk, sleep, and anxiety. We prescribe thoughtfully and monitor closely.

Sleep & anti-anxiety medication oversight

Insomnia and acute anxiety often drive people toward medications that can be habit-forming. We prioritize non-habit-forming options and short-term strategies when possible, with safety-first prescribing.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Suboxone, Vivitrol, and naltrexone for alcohol and opioid use disorders. MAT reduces cravings, blocks euphoric effects, and lowers relapse risk so therapy can do its work. Combined with PHP, IOP, or outpatient care.

Levels of care

Medication management across PHP, IOP, and outpatient

The right level depends on how severe symptoms are, how many medications need adjustment, and how much support you need between sessions.

  1. 015 days/week · ~6 hrs/day

    Medication management in PHP

Daily psychiatric monitoring and medication adjustment during our most intensive outpatient level. PHP is ideal when symptoms are severe, multiple medications need close tracking, or a recent crisis requires stabilization while you live at home.

  2. 023–5 days/week · day or evening

    Medication management in IOP

Structured medication checks built into an IOP schedule that includes therapy and skills groups. This level works well when you need frequent adjustment, accountability, and coordination between prescriber and therapist.

  3. 03Weekly to monthly · ongoing

    Outpatient medication management

Standalone psychiatric medication management for clients in therapy elsewhere or with us. Periodic follow-ups keep medication effective and catch problems early before they become crises.

  4. 04Coordinated with therapy

    MAT integration across all levels

Suboxone, Vivitrol, and naltrexone are prescribed in coordination with addiction and mental health treatment. We monitor labs, cravings, side effects, and progress so medication supports recovery rather than replacing it.

Medication-assisted treatment

MAT is evidence-based, not a replacement for recovery work

Suboxone reduces opioid withdrawal and cravings. Vivitrol and naltrexone block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids. These medications are most effective when paired with therapy, group work, and structured recovery support. We do not prescribe medication and walk away — we monitor, adjust, and coordinate with your full care plan.

FAQ

Questions about medication management

What does medication management involve?

Medication management is the ongoing process of prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting psychiatric medications or MAT based on how you're responding. It includes regular check-ins, symptom tracking, side-effect management, and coordination with your therapist and other providers.

Will you just put me on medication and leave me there?

No. Medication is one part of a larger plan. We expect it to work alongside therapy, lifestyle changes, and recovery support. If a medication isn't helping, we change the approach rather than simply refill it indefinitely.

Do you prescribe Suboxone or Vivitrol?

Yes. We offer medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone for opioid use disorder and Vivitrol or naltrexone for alcohol and opioid use disorders. MAT is prescribed alongside counseling in PHP, IOP, or outpatient care.

Can I get medication management without being in PHP or IOP?

Yes. Outpatient medication management is available for clients who need psychiatric prescribing and monitoring without attending a full-day or intensive program. We may recommend a higher level of care if symptoms are severe.

What if I have a history of substance use?

We take that into account for every medication decision. Some medications carry misuse risk; others are safer. We coordinate addiction treatment and psychiatric care so neither condition is treated in isolation.

Does insurance cover medication management?

Most commercial insurance plans cover psychiatric medication management and MAT when provided as part of outpatient mental health or addiction treatment. We verify your benefits before starting and explain your expected costs. Self-pay is also available.

Do you offer telehealth medication management?

Telehealth is available for Virginia residents, consistent with Virginia licensure requirements. Some medications require an in-person visit for initial evaluation or follow-up monitoring. Our team will let you know what's required for your specific situation.
