What virtual IOP is

Real IOP, just without the commute

Our virtual IOP program is the same clinical curriculum we run in Arlington, delivered live over secure video. You meet the same clinicians and the same group of peers on a set schedule. Nothing is pre-recorded and nothing is self-paced.

For a lot of people, the commute is the thing that ends treatment. Removing it — while keeping the structure — is what makes finishing a full course of care realistic alongside a job, school, or kids at home.

What's included

Everything our in-person IOP has, minus the drive

Live clinician-led groups

Not recorded modules. Every group is a real clinician and a consistent set of peers meeting at the same time each day.

Weekly individual therapy

A dedicated primary therapist who knows your history and drives the treatment plan, not a rotating queue.

Psychiatric care

Evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management for depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and ADHD alongside substance use treatment.

Family sessions

Virtual makes it far easier to get a partner or parent into the room — including family in another city.

Case management

Help with FMLA paperwork, employer and school documentation, and coordination with your outside providers.

Aftercare planning

A written continuing-care plan before you finish, with alumni support and a clear path back if things wobble.

Honest assessment

Is virtual IOP right for you?

Virtual IOP works well when

  • You live or are physically located in Virginia during sessions
  • You have a private space and a reliable internet connection
  • You're medically stable and not in acute withdrawal
  • You're not in active crisis or at imminent risk of self-harm
  • You can commit to a consistent weekly schedule

In person is the better call when

  • You need medical detox or 24-hour monitoring
  • You're in an unsafe or unstable living situation
  • You need in-person medication injections or lab work only we can do onsite
  • You've tried virtual care before and structure at a physical location works better for you

If you're not sure, call us. We'll tell you honestly which setting fits — including when the answer is a higher level of care.

Where we can deliver telehealth

Virginia residents for virtual IOP, everyone for in person

Our clinicians are licensed in Virginia, so telehealth sessions are available to people physically located in Virginia. If you live in Washington, DC or Maryland, you're welcome at our Arlington center for in-person PHP, IOP, and outpatient care — it's a short trip from most of the DMV.

Common questions

Virtual IOP program questions

Who can use your virtual IOP program?

Our virtual IOP program is available to people who are physically located in Virginia during their sessions. Our clinicians are licensed in Virginia, and state law requires that telehealth care be delivered to patients in the state where the clinician is licensed. Maryland and DC residents are welcome to attend in person at our Arlington center.

Can I do the virtual IOP program from Washington, DC or Maryland?

Not for telehealth sessions. If you live in DC or Maryland, we provide in-person PHP, IOP, and outpatient care at 5400 Shawnee Road in Arlington — a short commute for most of Northern Virginia, DC, and lower Montgomery County.

How long is the virtual IOP program each day?

Virtual IOP runs about three hours per day, three to five days per week, typically for eight to twelve weeks depending on progress. Morning and evening blocks are available so you can keep working.

Is virtual IOP as effective as in-person IOP?

For intensive outpatient care, research consistently shows comparable outcomes when the programming is live, clinician-led, and structured. What doesn't translate well to video is detox and 24-hour stabilization — those need a physical setting.

Can I get medication through the virtual IOP program?

Yes for psychiatric medications — our medical staff may prescribe and manage them by video. Some medication-assisted treatment options require an in-person visit or an injection; we'll tell you upfront which parts need to happen at the center.

What technology do I need for virtual IOP?

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a stable connection, plus a private space where you can speak freely. We'll walk you through the secure platform before your first session.

Is virtual IOP covered by insurance?

Most commercial plans cover telehealth behavioral health at the same level as in-person care. Our admissions team verifies your benefits and gives you your expected cost before you start.

Discharge planning & case management

Treatment doesn't end when the program does

The weeks after a program ends are where progress is most often lost. Our case management team builds the plan that carries you forward — the appointments, paperwork, support network, and practical logistics that keep recovery in place at home, at work, and with the people around you.

Discharge planning from day one

Your aftercare plan starts at intake, not the week you leave. Every step down — PHP to IOP to outpatient — is mapped with your clinical team so there is never a gap between levels of care.

Dedicated case management

A case manager stays with you through the whole episode of care, coordinating between your therapist, prescriber, family, and any outside providers so nothing falls through the cracks.

FMLA, disability & work paperwork

We help complete FMLA, short-term disability, and return-to-work documentation, and coordinate with employers and school administrators when you need protected time for treatment.

Community resource connection

Warm handoffs to local support — 12-step and SMART Recovery meetings, alumni groups, peer support, faith communities, and Arlington-area services rather than a printed list of phone numbers.

Housing, transportation & basic needs

Referrals to sober living and recovery housing, transportation options, food and benefits assistance, and legal or financial resources when stability outside the clinic is part of the plan.

An aftercare plan that covers your whole life

Written plans that address relapse prevention, medication follow-up, primary care, family communication, work or school re-entry, and what to do on the days that get hard.
