What outpatient care is

The level of care that lasts the longest

Outpatient treatment is one to two sessions a week — individual therapy, a group, and regular medication follow-up — while the rest of your life runs normally. It is the lightest structure we offer and, for most people, the one they stay in longest.

The hard part of recovery usually isn't the first month. It's month six, when the schedule loosens and the old routines start pulling back. Outpatient care is what keeps a clinician close enough to notice.

What's included

Ongoing care, built to be sustainable

Weekly individual therapy

A standing session with the same therapist, focused on the goals you carried out of PHP or IOP rather than starting the story over every few weeks.

Relapse-prevention & process groups

Small ongoing groups that keep accountability in the calendar — trigger review, craving protocols, and honest check-ins with people in the same stage.

Medication management

Our medical staff may prescribe and adjust psychiatric medication and MAT, with follow-up visits spaced to your stability instead of a fixed script.

Family sessions

Periodic family work to keep communication and boundaries intact as roles shift back toward normal life.

Skills refreshers

Targeted CBT and DBT refreshers when a stressor shows up — a new job, a loss, a hard anniversary — before it turns into a full setback.

Alumni & aftercare support

Continued connection to the community you built in program, which is often the difference between a rough month and a relapse.

Three programs, one structure

Addiction, mental health, and dual-diagnosis outpatient care

Who outpatient is for

Outpatient care may be the right fit if you're

  • Stepping down from PHP or IOP and ready for less structure without dropping care entirely.
  • Managing depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder that is stable but still needs consistent clinical attention.
  • In recovery from substance use and wanting ongoing accountability, monitoring, and medication support.
  • Not in crisis, safe at home, and able to hold your week together between appointments.

Levels of care

Where outpatient sits in the continuum

Most people step down through these levels as stability builds — and step back up if things get shaky. You aren't locked into where you start.

  1. 016 hrs/day · 5 days/week

    Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Our most structured outpatient level. Full-day clinical programming with daily medical and psychiatric oversight.

  2. 023 hrs/day · 3–5 days/week

    Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Group and individual therapy several times a week, with morning and evening tracks around work and school.

  3. 031–2 sessions/week

    Outpatient treatment

Weekly therapy, medication management, and relapse-prevention groups that keep structure in place long term.

Maryland & DC commuters

In-person outpatient care, accessible from Maryland and DC

Our Arlington center is a short drive from Bethesda, Silver Spring, and much of Montgomery and Prince George's County, and we see patients commuting from Washington, DC. In-person outpatient care is open to Virginia, Maryland, and DC residents; telehealth sessions are available to Virginia residents only.

Common questions

Outpatient treatment questions, answered

What is outpatient treatment?

Outpatient treatment is the least intensive level of structured care. It typically means one to two sessions a week — individual therapy, group work, and medication management — while you live at home and keep your normal work, school, and family schedule.

How is outpatient different from IOP?

IOP runs about 3 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week. Outpatient treatment is usually one to two hours a week. Most people move from PHP to IOP to outpatient as they stabilize, and outpatient is where care can continue for many months.

How long does outpatient treatment last?

There is no fixed endpoint. Some people stay in weekly outpatient care for a few months after IOP; others keep a monthly medication visit and a standing therapy hour for years. We adjust the frequency to your stability rather than to a program length.

Can I start in outpatient without doing PHP or IOP first?

Yes. If your assessment shows you are safe, stable, and able to make progress at this intensity, outpatient can be your starting point. If it turns out you need more support, we can step you up to IOP or PHP without changing providers.

Do you offer virtual outpatient sessions?

Yes. Secure telehealth sessions are available for Virginia residents, since our clinicians are licensed in Virginia. In-person outpatient care at our Arlington center is open to Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC residents.

Is outpatient treatment covered by insurance?

Almost always. Outpatient therapy and medication management are standard covered benefits on most commercial plans. Our admissions team verifies your benefits and tells you your expected copay before your first visit.

Discharge planning & case management

Treatment doesn't end when the program does

The weeks after a program ends are where progress is most often lost. Our case management team builds the plan that carries you forward — the appointments, paperwork, support network, and practical logistics that keep recovery in place at home, at work, and with the people around you.

Discharge planning from day one

Your aftercare plan starts at intake, not the week you leave. Every step down — PHP to IOP to outpatient — is mapped with your clinical team so there is never a gap between levels of care.

Dedicated case management

A case manager stays with you through the whole episode of care, coordinating between your therapist, prescriber, family, and any outside providers so nothing falls through the cracks.

FMLA, disability & work paperwork

We help complete FMLA, short-term disability, and return-to-work documentation, and coordinate with employers and school administrators when you need protected time for treatment.

Community resource connection

Warm handoffs to local support — 12-step and SMART Recovery meetings, alumni groups, peer support, faith communities, and Arlington-area services rather than a printed list of phone numbers.

Housing, transportation & basic needs

Referrals to sober living and recovery housing, transportation options, food and benefits assistance, and legal or financial resources when stability outside the clinic is part of the plan.

An aftercare plan that covers your whole life

Written plans that address relapse prevention, medication follow-up, primary care, family communication, work or school re-entry, and what to do on the days that get hard.
