This fear keeps people from reaching out at the exact moment help would matter most. It deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance.
If you are in immediate danger, call or text 988, or call 911.
The rest of this page is about what happens when you do — not a reason to wait.
The short answer
Almost always, no. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is staffed by trained crisis counselors whose entire job is to de-escalate and resolve the situation on the call. Lifeline network data has consistently shown that emergency services are dispatched in only a small minority of contacts — generally reported in the low single digits as a percentage — and that most of those dispatches happen with the caller's knowledge and cooperation.
Involuntary dispatch is reserved for situations where someone's life is in immediate danger and there is no other way to keep them safe: an overdose in progress, an attempt already underway, a call that disconnects mid-crisis.
What a 988 contact actually sounds like
You will reach a counselor, usually at a local or regional center. They will ask what is going on, listen, and ask about safety — including whether you are thinking about suicide. Being asked that question does not trigger anything. It is a standard part of the conversation, and answering honestly does not summon anyone to your door.
From there the conversation usually turns practical: what would help in the next hour, who could stay with you tonight, whether you have care in place, what happens tomorrow. Many calls end with a referral to outpatient care rather than any emergency response.
If dispatch is your specific fear, say so
You can open the call with it: "I want to talk, but I'm afraid you'll send police." Crisis counselors hear this constantly and will tell you plainly what would and would not lead to a dispatch. You can also use text or chat, which many people find lowers the stakes.
Some regions also operate mobile crisis teams staffed by clinicians rather than law enforcement. Asking whether one is available in your area is a reasonable question.
Crisis lines are not a treatment plan
988 is designed for the moment. It is not designed to treat depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or a substance use disorder over time. If you have found yourself calling a crisis line more than once, that is a strong signal that ongoing structured care would change things.
Our partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs exist specifically for people who are struggling seriously but do not need a hospital bed — the gap where most people fall through. You can see what fits with our level of care assessment or call (571) 586-2883.
Frequently asked questions
- Does 988 send police to your house?
- Rarely. The overwhelming majority of 988 contacts are resolved on the call itself. Emergency services are involved in only a small share of contacts, generally when there is an imminent risk to life and no other way to keep the person safe.
- Does 988 trace my location?
- 988 routes calls by area code or, for some carriers, by approximate geographic routing — not by precise GPS tracking. Counselors typically ask where you are rather than knowing it automatically.
- Can I text or chat instead of calling?
- Yes. 988 accepts text messages and web chat, which many people find easier, especially younger callers and anyone who cannot speak privately.
- Is 988 confidential?
- Calls are confidential and are not added to a criminal record. Crisis lines do follow duty-to-protect standards when there is imminent danger to a person's life or someone else's.
- What if I just need someone to talk to and I am not in danger?
- That is a legitimate use of 988. You do not need to be in immediate crisis. Counselors talk with people about substance use, grief, anxiety, loneliness, and stress every day.
