Does Insurance Cover Treatment for My Spouse or Child?

If your spouse or child is on your health plan, their addiction and mental health treatment is almost certainly covered in some form. Here's how it works, and what you'll see on your statements.

Who on your plan is covered

  • Spouses enrolled on your plan have the same behavioral health benefits you do.
  • Children up to 26. Under the Affordable Care Act, plans that offer dependent coverage must keep adult children on until 26, even if they're married, out of school, or living somewhere else.
  • Minors. Covered like any other dependent. Our programs serve adults, so if your child is under 18, we'll help you find an adolescent program.

What is usually covered

Most commercial plans in Virginia — including Anthem, CareFirst, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, and Sentara — cover outpatient levels of care like ours:

Federal parity law means most plans can't make these harder to get than comparable medical care. Read more in our parity guide.

What it may cost your family

Costs depend on the deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. A family deductible already partly met by other medical bills can lower the cost a lot. Ask for three numbers: how much of the deductible is left, what percentage you pay after that, and how far you are from the out-of-pocket maximum.

Privacy when you're the policyholder

Paying the premium doesn't give you access to an adult family member's treatment records. We can share updates only with their written consent, which many patients gladly give. Statements about claims may still be mailed to the policyholder. If that's a safety concern, the patient can ask the plan to send them somewhere else.

Check benefits in about one business hour

Call (571) 586-2883 with the member's name, date of birth, carrier, and member ID, or use the verify insurance form on our insurance page. We'll explain costs before anyone commits to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does my plan cover my adult child's treatment?
If your plan offers dependent coverage, the Affordable Care Act requires it to cover children up to age 26 — whether they are married, in school, living at home, or eligible for their own employer's plan. Their behavioral health benefits are the same as everyone else's on the plan.
Are addiction and mental health covered the same way as medical care?
Under federal parity law, most employer and marketplace plans can't put stricter limits on mental health and substance use treatment than on comparable medical care — including copays, visit limits, and prior authorization rules.
Will I see my child's or spouse's treatment on my statements?
Possibly. Explanation of Benefits statements often go to the main policyholder. A covered family member can ask the plan to send their communications to a different address. Plans must honor that request when sending it to the usual address could put the person in danger.
Can the treatment center tell me how my family member is doing?
Only with their written consent. Substance use treatment records are protected by 42 CFR Part 2, which is stricter than HIPAA. Being the policyholder doesn't give you access to the records.
Can I verify benefits before my loved one agrees to treatment?
Yes. Our admissions team can run a benefits check with the member's insurance details. This helps you answer the 'how would we even pay for it' question before you talk.

Talk with our admissions team

A benefits check takes about five to ten minutes and there is no obligation to enroll. We are in-network with major commercial plans and can tell you what your policy covers before you commit.
