Optima Health — now operating as Sentara Health Plans — covers addiction and mental health treatment across Virginia, on both its commercial and Medicaid products. What differs between those product lines is the authorization process, the network, and how much you pay.

Optima product lines and what they mean for you

  • Commercial and marketplace plans: behavioral health is an essential health benefit and is subject to federal parity protections.
  • Optima Family Care (Medicaid): covers the Virginia ARTS benefit with little to no member cost sharing.
  • Medicare Advantage: covers outpatient behavioral health and psychiatry with plan-specific copays.
  • Employer group plans: common among Sentara and other large Virginia employers; benefits vary by group.

Covered levels of care

Optima plans reimburse the standard continuum: assessment and diagnosis, withdrawal management, residential treatment, PHP, IOP, outpatient therapy, psychiatric medication management, and medication-assisted treatment. Coverage for co-occurring conditions is handled together rather than as two separate episodes, which is how our dual diagnosis track is built.

Authorization and medical necessity

Like other Virginia payers, Optima applies ASAM criteria for substance use levels of care. A clinical assessment documents withdrawal risk, medical and psychiatric complications, readiness to change, relapse potential, and your recovery environment. Those six ASAM dimensions are literally what the reviewer scores, so a thorough assessment protects your access to the right level of care.

Initial authorizations are typically written for a block of days — often one to two weeks of PHP or a set number of IOP sessions — then extended through concurrent review. Your clinician submits progress notes showing what still requires that intensity: continued cravings, psychiatric symptoms, or instability in your recovery environment. Strong documentation at each review is what keeps coverage in place through a full episode of care.

What Optima members pay out of pocket

Cost sharing follows your plan design. Medicaid members in Optima Family Care generally owe nothing for covered addiction treatment. Commercial members typically pay against their deductible first, then a coinsurance percentage until the out-of-pocket maximum is met. Because Sentara is headquartered in Virginia and heavily represented in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia employer groups, network participation is broad — but a benefits check is the only way to know your exact numbers before you start.

What to ask when you call about benefits

  • Is the provider in-network for my specific plan, not just the payer overall?
  • Does PHP or IOP require prior authorization, and is a PCP referral also needed?
  • What is my remaining deductible and out-of-pocket maximum this plan year?
  • Are virtual intensive outpatient sessions covered at the same rate as in-person?
  • Which number handles behavioral health authorizations — the medical line or a behavioral health carve-out?

If you would rather skip the hold music, our admissions team runs this verification with Optima or Sentara directly and gives you a written estimate before any commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Does Optima Health cover drug and alcohol rehab?
Yes. Optima Health plans — now branded Sentara Health Plans — cover substance use disorder and mental health treatment, including outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, medication-assisted treatment, and medically necessary inpatient or residential care.
Is Optima Health the same as Sentara Health Plans?
Yes. Optima Health rebranded to Sentara Health Plans. Many members still carry cards or refer to their plan as Optima, and benefits verification works the same way under either name.
Does Optima Medicaid cover addiction treatment?
Optima Family Care and other Virginia Medicaid managed care plans cover the ARTS benefit, which pays for the full addiction treatment continuum including ASAM Level 2.1 intensive outpatient and 2.5 partial hospitalization.
Do I need a referral for outpatient rehab with Optima?
HMO products may require a primary care referral in addition to plan authorization for higher levels of care. We confirm both requirements during verification so nothing delays your start date.
What if Optima denies my PHP or IOP authorization?
You can appeal internally and then request an external review through Virginia's State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance if the denial stands. Under federal parity law you are entitled to the medical-necessity criteria the reviewer used, and your clinical team can request a peer-to-peer review with the plan's medical director.
