Most treatment centers in Virginia are built for one problem or the other: a rehab that tolerates psychiatric symptoms, or a mental health clinic that refers out the moment substances enter the picture. We were built to treat both at the same level of seriousness, in the same building, by the same team.
Mental health and addiction, treated as equals
You do not need a substance use history to be here. Someone whose depression has made work impossible, or whose panic attacks have shrunk their life to a few safe rooms, belongs in structured outpatient care exactly as much as someone whose drinking has escalated. Our partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs run parallel tracks so mental health clients are never treated as the exception in a room built around addiction.
When both are present — the far more common case — they are treated together in our dual diagnosis program. Treating them in sequence is what fails people: sobriety without treated trauma tends not to hold, and psychiatric care that ignores nightly drinking tends not to work.
What we treat
Levels of care available in Virginia
Care is matched to need, not to a package. PHP runs roughly 25 to 30 hours a week for people who need daily structure; IOP runs nine to fifteen hours and fits around a job or school; outpatient therapy and psychiatry carry the long tail of recovery. Clients located anywhere in Virginia can attend our virtual IOP instead of commuting.
Psychiatric care runs alongside every track: medication management for mental health conditions and medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders, overseen by our medical director, Jeffrey H. Simon, M.D.
Insurance and cost
We verify benefits with major commercial plans in Virginia, including Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, and Optima Health / Sentara. Federal parity law requires those plans to cover behavioral health no more restrictively than medical care. Frequently asked questions
- Can I come here for depression or anxiety alone, without substance use?
- Yes. Our PHP and IOP tracks accept people whose primary concern is depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD or panic disorder. No substance use history is required to enroll.
- What is the difference between dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders?
- They describe the same clinical picture: a mental health condition and a substance use disorder present at the same time. What matters is that both are treated together by one team rather than in sequence by two.
- Where is the center located and who can attend?
- In-person programming is at 5400 Shawnee Road, Alexandria, VA 22312, serving clients from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. Virtual IOP is available to people physically located in Virginia.
- Do you provide detox or inpatient care?
- We are an outpatient center. When someone needs medically managed withdrawal or inpatient stabilization, we coordinate a referral to a trusted, vetted partner and take them back at the PHP or IOP level when they step down.
